What is Xpark—and why the hype?

Xpark opened August 2020 as Taiwan’s first major aquarium planned with Japan’s Hakkeijima Sea Paradise team. It has been one of Taoyuan’s hottest family draws, with weekend slots frequently selling out.

Unlike classic “tanks in rows” venues, Xpark sells immersion—projection, lighting, and soundscapes widen the experience beyond simply watching fish. The Formosa main tank and Healing Jellyfish zones are social-media staples.

Roughly 4,500 ping (~15,000 m²) house 13 zones and some 300 species—tens of thousands of individuals—from deep fish to penguins, jellyfish, and seals, among Taiwan’s richest urban collections.

Buy-one-get-one and seasonal promos

Limited campaigns often appear around:

  • Anniversary season (August opening period)
  • Bank partnerships for cardholder offers
  • OTA flash sales on Klook, KKday, etc.
  • Off-peak weekdays occasional weekday specials

Suggestion: Check Klook before you go—even without BOGO, online purchase often saves money and secures entry; holidays may stop walk-up sales when capacity is reached.

Saving money

Student ID saves NT$150 vs. adult. Gloria Outlets beside Xpark sometimes bundles shopping credit with tickets—worth watching if you plan to shop.

Must-see zones

Thirteen zones total—prioritize these:

1. Formosa main tank

A multi-level giant tank with sharks, rays, and schooling fish. On the hour, a “coral dive” light show with projections simulates descending from surface to depth—try to catch at least one run.

2. Healing Jellyfish

Cylindrical jelly tanks with shifting lights—very photogenic. Visit on weekday openings or first entry waves for cleaner shots.

3. Penguin Life

Magellanic and king penguins up close; scheduled feeding talks draw crowds.

4. Tide Pool Zone

Touch pool with sea stars and sea cucumbers—kids love it; staff coach gentle handling.

5. Xcafe (penguin café)

Drinks beside a penguin window—around NT$150–200 for beverages, limited food, big atmosphere. Limited seats; weekends queue.

Best entry times

Timed entry matters—choose slots wisely.

Weekday vs. weekend

  • Weekday 10:00: Lightest crowds—ideal if you can take time off.
  • Weekday after 14:00: Still comfortable though traffic builds.
  • Weekends: Busy all day—try 16:00 or 18:00 entries for slightly thinner halls and later closing.

Summer and long holidays

July–August and consecutive holidays pack even weekdays—book at least a week ahead. Walk-up purchase may be turned away.

Insider flow

At opening, head to Healing Jellyfish and Penguin Life before crowds thicken, or tour counterclockwise. Formosa shows run hourly—you don’t need the first show.

Getting there

THSR (recommended)

Next to THSR Taoyuan Station—about 8 minutes on foot toward Gloria Outlets; Xpark sits beside Shin Kong Cinemas. From Taipei roughly 20 minutes by HSR plus walking.

Airport MRT

To THSR Taoyuan Station (A18), then ~10 minutes on foot—about 40 minutes from Taipei Main.

Self-drive

Navigate to Gloria Outlets or Shin Kong Cinemas Taoyuan; shared underground parking. Reference: NT$40/hour weekdays, NT$60/hour weekends—mall spend may qualify for parking discounts.

Nearby half- or full-day combos

  • Gloria Outlets (~3 min walk): major outlet shopping and dining.
  • Shin Kong Cinemas (~1 min): movie after the aquarium—rainy-day backup.
  • IKEA Taoyuan (~10 min walk): meatballs and furniture browsing.
  • Global Mall A19 (one metro stop): another mall option.

FAQ

Great for design, immersion, and transport convenience. For maximum biodiversity or dolphin shows, consider southern or east-coast alternatives—pick by priority.

Very family-friendly; strollers allowed though holidays get tight. Ages 4+ often enjoy touch pools most. Nursing and family restrooms on site.

About 2–2.5 hours for all zones; 3 hours with feeding shows, Xcafe, and photos. Add outlet time for a half-day outing.

Outside food isn’t allowed in exhibit areas; Xcafe serves drinks and light bites—use Gloria’s food court for full meals beforehand.

Summary

Xpark is among Taiwan’s most successful new aquariums—Japanese-influenced design plus tech for a different vibe from traditional venues. Northern families gain a huge win from THSR access. Crowds are the main pain point: favor weekdays, book early, and pick later slots on weekends. Do that, and the visit usually feels worth it.
