Getting around
Trains from Taipei take about 4–5 hours; from Kaohsiung about 2–3 hours. Taitung Airport handles domestic flights. Scooters work well in town; exploring the East Rift Valley and coast is easier by car or charter.
Best time to visit
Taitung is rewarding year-round. The Taiwan International Balloon Festival (roughly June–August) is a summer highlight; winter is perfect for Zhiben hot springs.
